Mean Green Lose 71-58 At No. 13 Dayton
12/17/2019 9:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio — The North Texas men's basketball team held No. 13 Dayton to a season-low 71 points, 15 below its season average, but the Mean Green couldn't overcome a slow start as they fell 71-58.
Led by redshirt junior Javion Hamlet and junior Zachary Simmons who combined for 25 points in the second half, the Mean Green (4-7) outscored the Flyers (8-1) 39-37 in the second frame.
Hamlet led all scorers as he dropped a career-high 19 points and had game-high 6 assists to go along with the scoring. Simmons scored a season-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Defensively, North Texas limited the Flyers' Obi Toppin, a Preseason Karl Malone Trophy Watch List honoree, to a season-low 11 points.
"Unfortunately early in the game it looked like we were in slow motion," said head coach Grant McCasland. "Finally in the second-half we woke up but give Dayton credit. They have a veteran and talented team."
Coming off a 10-day break for exams, the Mean Green struggled offensively, scoring just 19 points and going 0-for-4 from deep. They committed 10 first half turnovers to go along with 10 fouls and trailed 34-19 at the midway break.
In the second-half, Hamlet scored 13 of his 19 points and went 3-of-3 from deep and he had five of his six assists in the second half.
In the second half, Simmons attacked the hoop and had impeccable touch around the rim. Furthermore, he went 2-of-2 from deep. They were just his third and fourth 3-pointers of his career and the first time he's made more than one in a game.
"Zach was competitive and gave us an anchor down low when we needed it against a really good team," McCasland said. "He took advantage of opportunities to score and came through."
UNT went 9-of-15 from beyond the arc in the second-half and cut the deficit to as little as single digits with under six minutes left. But every time the Mean Green looked to be making a run, Dayton hit them back with a 3-pointer or clutch basket.
The Mean Green return home on Saturday to host Arkansas Pine Bluff at 5 p.m. CT.
