Women's Golf Prepared For The Dickson

The North Texas women's golf team returns to action to begin its spring season against a strong field at The Dickson.

THE EVENT: The Woodlands Country Club will play at 6,392 yards, and will be a par-72 course. The two-day event begins Monday, when teams will play 36 holes, teeing off at 8 a.m., for a shotgun start. The final round will begin at 8 a.m., Tuesday, for a shotgun start.

THE FIELD: There are 16 teams participating in the tournament, including seven teams in the top 50 of the GolfStat national poll and four more (Memphis, Middle Tennessee, SMU and Texas A&M) ranked just outside the top 50: No. 33 Houston, No. 35 Baylor, No. 18 Clemson, Kansas State, No. 9 Kent State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, No. 27 Purdue, SMU, Southern Mississippi, No. 20 TCU, Texas A&M, Texas State, No. 46 Texas Tech and UT San Antonio.

REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Lauren Cox, Madison Lewis, Sabina Pena, Patricia Sinolungan and Audrey Tan.

LAST TIME OUT: North Texas finished eighth out of 12 teams at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas back in October in its fall finale. The Mean Green tied No. 25 Oregon State for the best round of the day in the final round of the tournament and saw two players (Patricia Sinolungan and Lauren Cox) tie for 16th on the final leaderboard.

TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: North Texas has made significant strides since head Michael Akers took over roughly three years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared as many as 109 spots to break into the top 100, and ended last season 92 spots better than when he arrived in Denton. The first official ranking of 2018-19 was released before the Betsy Rawls, and had North Texas ranked No. 103. Heading into this tournament, UNT is ranked No. 84.

AKERS SAYS: "The field is loaded. It always is. The golf course is great. They used to host a PGA tournament there," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "It's a really well run tournament and we only played 18 holes last year because of rain. It was obviously really rough last year, but in the past we've had some success there. Lauren and Sabina have seen the course and the freshmen have been asking a lot of questions about it. I think we're in the right mindset."

UP NEXT: The Mean Green will take flight to Kailua, Hawaii for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational March 12-13 at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
