IRVING – Patricia Sinolungan has drawn praise from UNT coach Michael Akers since long before she ever set foot in Denton.
On Wednesday, the young freshman from Indonesia gave him good reason to add some more when she was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week after she tied for 11th place at the loaded ICON Invitational, which was wrapped up on Tuesday at The Woodlands Country Club.
"I am very excited to see Patricia receive this honor," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "Our tournament schedule is very difficult, so it is not easy for our players to earn top finishes in events. Patricia works very hard, and I'm pleased to see that effort pay off."
Sinolungan battled difficult conditions in The Woodlands to shoot a 76-72-71 for a three-round total of 219. Over the course of the three rounds, she had nine birdies – seven of which came in the final two rounds as she helped UNT climb the leaderboard and finish eighth in a field that included six top-50 teams. In the process, the Mean Green passed and finished ahead of No. 46 Texas Tech.
Sinolungan also finished ahead of six golfers ranked in the top 85 individually, led by Texas Tech's Sofia Garcia, who entered the tournament ranked No. 18 in the GolfStat national poll.
Sinolungan and her teammates will be back in action March 12-13 at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kailua, Hawaii.
