DENTON – Former Texas State tight ends coach Adrian Mayes has been named to the same position on the North Texas staff, head football coach Seth Littrell announced Thursday.
"We are very happy to add coach Mayes to our staff," Littrell said. "First and foremost, he fits our culture, which is very important to me. He also has great relationships with high school coaches which will go a long way in helping our recruiting efforts throughout the state of Texas."
Mayes spent his last three seasons at Texas State, two of which as the tight ends coach after coaching the offensive line in 2016. Mayes also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Bobcats during his time in San Marcos.
In 2018 Mayes coached Pro Football Focus First-Team All-American Keenen Brown, who caught a team-best 51 passes for 577 yards and five scores. Brown, also named to the Sun Belt's first team, had 17 more receptions than the team's second leading receiver.
In 2017, Mayes coached All-Sun Belt Conference Second-Team tight end Gabe Schrade, who caught 20 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns.
Mayes joined Texas State's staff after serving as the director of football recruiting at Houston during the 2015 season. The previous year, he was an offensive graduate assistant at Ohio State in 2014 when the Buckeyes won the first College Football Playoff Championship with victories over Alabama and Oregon.
Mayes went to Ohio State after serving three seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Rice, where he coached both the offensive and defensive lines for the Owls during his tenure. He also spent two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant coach in 2012 and 2013 after beginning his coaching career as an offensive graduate assistant coach in 2011.
He helped coach the Owls to a Conference USA championship, a Liberty Bowl berth in 2013 and a 33-14 victory over Air Force in the 2012 Armed Forces Bowl. His coaching experience also includes completing an internship with the New York Jets while working with the running backs in the spring and summer of 2013.
Mayes began his coaching career after playing four seasons at Kansas, where he developed into a standout offensive guard and was named the Jayhawks' Offensive Lineman of the Year as a senior. He initially joined the Jayhawks as a walk-on before being named a two-time Honorable Mention All-Big 12 selection and playing on three bowl championship teams in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl, 2008 Orange Bowl and 2008 Insight Bowl. He also was named to the Big 12 All-Academic Second Team twice.
