DENTON – Galen Scott has been named the Mean Green's linebackers coach, head coach Seth Littrell announced Thursday.
"Being able to add someone at the caliber of coach Scott at this stage of the offseason is key for us," Littrell said. "He has great experience throughout his career and his leadership will be important in the development of a young linebacking corps. We are excited to get him to Denton ahead of spring practice and bring him into our family."
Scott, who was hired by Old Dominion in January to serve as their defensive backs coach, joins the Mean Green after coaching the defensive backs at Rowlett High School in 2018. Prior to that, he was the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Virginia Tech for two seasons. Scott helped the Hokies to a pair of bowl games, and was a key component on staff during a 10-win season in 2016 that saw the Hokies win the ACC Coastal Division and defeat Arkansas in the Belk Bowl.
Before joining Virginia Tech, he spent six seasons at Memphis, coaching the linebackers before becoming the defensive coordinator in his final season. He helped the Tigers to three bowl games, including a share of the AAC Championship in 2014.
He spent two seasons at Tulsa as the outside linebackers and secondary coach, and prior to that coached eight years at his alma mater, Illinois State, including three seasons as the defensive coordinator. During that time, he coached five-straight players who were named conference defensive player of the year.
Scott was a three-time FCS All-American linebacker for the Redbirds and graduated as the school's all-time leading tackler, before Boomer Grigsby, coached by Scott, broke the ISU record.
