UNT Women Ready For Mountainview

The North Texas women's golf team returns to action after a strong showing in Hawaii and will be up against a strong field in Arizona.

THE EVENT: The Preserve Golf Club will play at 6,218 yards, and will be a par-72 course. The three-day event begins Friday at 9 a.m., CT, with teams teeing off at Holes 1 and 10. The second round will begin at the same time Saturday from Holes 1 and 10, and then the final round will begin at 9 a.m., Sunday with a shotgun start.

THE FIELD: There are 13 teams participating in the tournament, including four teams in the top 50 nationally and three more just outside the top 50: No. 25 Houston, No. 43 Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, North Texas, No. 29 Oregon State, SMU, Southern Mississippi, Texas A&M, Texas State, UNLV, No. 27 Washington and Wisconsin.

REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Sabina Pena, Patricia Sinolungan, Audrey Tan, Lauren Cox and Madison Lewis.

LAST TIME OUT: North Texas finished fourth at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kailua, Hawaii, as the Mean Green had four golfers finish in the top 20 – Pena, Tan, Cox and Sinolungan.

TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: North Texas has made significant strides since head Michael Akers took over roughly three years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared as many as 109 spots to break into the top 100, and ended last season 92 spots better than when he arrived in Denton. The first official ranking of 2018-19 was released before the Betsy Rawls, and had North Texas ranked No. 103. Heading into this tournament, UNT is ranked No. 79.

AKERS SAYS: "We look forward to getting back in competition after our strong finish in Hawaii. We will need to adjust to the elevation and to the firm conditions. The tournament is on a new course this year, so the practice will be very important."

THE CHAMP IS HERE: Mean Green assistant coach Krista Puisite, who is in her first year at North Texas, won the Mountainview Collegiate in 2013 as a player for Texas State, where Akers was her head coach. Puisite shot a 73-67-69-209 to win the tournament. "It is really cool to have a former champion of this event as our assistant coach," Akers said.

UP NEXT: The Mean Green will host The Bruzzy at Lantana Golf Club on April 1-2 after the tournament's inaugural run last year at the Maridoe Golf Club.
