FORT MYERS, Fla. – The North Texas women's golf team will begin play at the Conference USA tournament Monday morning at the Verandah Golf Club with hopes of securing a conference championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
UNT enters the tournament with the fifth-highest national ranking in the field.
"We just need to have three consistent rounds and minimize any mistakes," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "Our depth has been an issue this spring, but we are not facing any top-25 teams this week so we know we can win if we mistakes to a bogey."
UNT will be led by an experienced duo of junior Lauren Cox and senior Sabina Pena. Cox has been the team's top player all year and is on pace to set a new low for season scoring average in program history and is coming off a top-10 finish at The Bruzzy where she sat a new program record for low round when she shot a 66.
Pena, along with Cox, had a top-five finish at the event last year, and Pena also had a top-five finish at the Big 12 tournament her freshman year at TCU before transferring to North Texas.
"Lauren and Sabina both had top-five finishes last year so they both should be very confident," Akers said. "Lauren has had a great season from start to now, and Sabina seems to always shine at the end of the year."
With that experience on the team's side, it might come down to the play of the Mean Green's two freshmen, Patricia Sinolungan and Audrey Tan.
"The freshmen are showing us great things in practice," Akers said. "They are very dedicated to their craft and go the extra mile. We are doing our best to educate them on the course and conditions they will face in Florida."
