UNT Fourth After Day 1 At C-USA Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The North Texas women's golf team put itself in position to contend for a conference championship on Monday, as the Conference USA Championships began at Verandah Golf Club.
North Texas is in fourth place after the opening round after going 1-under par with a 287, and the Mean Green will tee off Round 2 on Tuesday morning at 7 a.m., before concluding the tournament on Wednesday with a berth in the NCAA tournament on the line.
"You cannot win a tournament in Round 1, but you can lose it," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "We had a solid start today and need to try to improve each day. Each of our players left shots on the course, and they know it."
The Mean Green were led by freshman Audrey Tan, who shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for fourth – one shot off the lead. Her teammates, junior Lauren Cox and freshman Patricia Sinolungan, are two shots off the lead after shooting 1-under 71s.
Senior Sabina Pena shot a 4-over 40 on the front nine before rebounding to shoot 1-under on the back nine and help the team score stay under par.
"Sabina did a great job of recovering late in the round and saved us shots," Akers said. "We lack depth this spring and need everyone to grind for each shot. It was great to see Audrey, Patty and Lauren all break par."
Heading into the second round Tuesday, the Mean Green are one shot back of third-place Charlotte, while Old Dominion and UT-San Antonio are tied for the lead at 6-under par.
