Mean Green Sweep Titles In Stadium Debut

DENTON – North Texas track and field took the men's and women's team titles at the North Texas Classic Saturday at the team's first home meet since 2014 at the debut of the Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
The men tallied 156 points to beat out UT-Arlington who accumulated 143, while the women dominated with 216 over the next closest competitor, Prairie View A&M, with 136. Other schools competing included Pratt Community College, Abilene Christian and Texas Wesleyan.
"I think everyone was excited about competing today. We had a pretty respectable showing," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "There were lots of great performances today. The facility provided great opportunities to run fast and throw far."
Cassidy Adams placed herself second in the UNT record books with a personal best time of 10:57.99 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for first place. Other women Mean Green top finishes on the track went to Rea Iseli in the 1500 (4:40.26), Lyric Choice in the 100 hurdles with a personal record (14.07), and Aneesa Scott in the 400 (54.46) and a personal record in 200 (23.94). Field event title winners included Ashlynn Smart in the hammer with the third-best throw in UNT history at a personal best 52.28 meters, Jaleisa Shaffer in shot put (14.05), Haley Walker in discus (45.12), Breanna Eckels in long jump (6.06), and Valencia Bullock in triple jump (11.95).
Darien Porter ran a personal record time of 21.14 in the 200-meter dash for top honors, Jack Beaumont was first in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:26.63, and Zion Hill captured the title in javelin with a throw of 64.09 meters.
Joseph Squire recorded second place with a personal record time of 14.29 in the 100-meter hurdles. Other men's runner-up finishes were Beaumont in steeplechase (9:33.68), Florian Lussy in the 1,500 (3:52.17), Karl Sralla in the discus (51.18 meters), Chris Samaniego in shot put (14.91), Matthew Morgan in the 5,000 (15:37.80) and the 4x400 relay team of Abdon Campbell, Porter, Davonye Jones and James Cole (3:22.58). The women's second place finishers were Aubrey Schmidt in the 1,500 (4:50.60), Kristyn Archuleta in javelin (42.80 meters) and the women's 4x100 relay team of Taylor Blackshire, Artesha Richardson, Bria Williams and Jahyda Dixon (46.40).
"Our officials did an excellent job of keeping the event moving and on time. We owe them a debt of gratitude," Sheffield said.
The Mean Green travel to the K.T. Woodman Classic hosted by Wichita State April 13.
