NORMAN, Okla. - UNT junior Lauren Cox wrapped up play at the NCAA Regional at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club on Wednesday, shooting a 4-over-par 76 to finish at 17-over in a tie for 79th place.
Cox, who was just the second player in program history to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament as an individual, capped a historic season, which saw her tie the school record for low round with a 66 at The Bruzzy and set a new program record for lowest single-season scoring average of 73.89. That mark broke the previous record of 74.62 set by Randi Gauthier 16 years ago. She also moved into second place on the program's all-time list for most birdies in a year. Cox had three birdies on Wednesday after the round began three hours late, and in a shotgun format, thanks to inclement weather in the morning hours. She had consecutive birdies on the Par 3 12th hole and the Par 5 13th hole.

"NCAA Regionals did not go how Lauren wanted but that does not take away from the incredible year she had," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "Only 24 individuals were selected to participate in the NCAA Regionals, and she was one of them. That is a big deal."
Akers went on to praise Cox's historic year and said she will be at the forefront of what he expects to be a banner year for his program next season.Â
"Women's golf at UNT has been around for decades, and she set the low scoring average record," Akers said. "We are very proud of Lauren. I am very excited about the returning and new players we are surrounding her with for next year. She is going to have a very fun senior year."
