DENTON — The Mean Green men's basketball team will play in the 2019 Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic, North Texas announced Monday.
In its third year, the annual eight-team college basketball tournament will be held Nov. 22-24 at the picturesque resort of Montego Bay, Jamaica.
"We're excited to showcase Mean Green basketball on a national stage in the Caribbean," UNT head coach Grant McCasland said. "The Jamaica Classic is high-caliber and competitive games seen on a national spotlight, which is a great way for us to start our season. We can't wait to go to Jamaica in November and have a great showing from our fan base to help paint Montego Bay green."
The 2019 field includes LSU, Nicholls State, Utah State, Rhode Island, North Carolina A&T, Samford, and Maryland Baltimore County. Eight tournament games will be held on the four host campus sites and eight games at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Jamaica. CBS Sports will broadcast and stream all the games.
The Mean Green are entering their third season under McCasland. UNT posted back-to-back 20-win seasons and returns leading scorer Umoja Gibson, who set the Conference USA freshman record for three-pointers last season with 99. Senior Roosevelt Smart, who in 2017-18 set the school-record for points (748) and three-pointers (133) is back as well.
This will be the first time the UNT men's basketball team has played in Jamaica.
