DENTON – Senior quarterback Mason Fine's Heisman Trophy campaign is officially underway with the launch of 6ForHeisman.com.
The Peggs, Oklahoma, native enters his fourth season as a starter as the FBS' active national leader in career passing yards (9,417) and is the two-time reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year. He leads a Mean Green offense that has averaged 35.1 points per game over the last two seasons.
Fine threw for 3,793 yards, 27 touchdowns to just five interceptions, completed 64.6% of his passes and added two more scores on the ground in 2018.
It's understandable why people once overlooked Fine. He wasn't a three-, four- or five-star recruit. He stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs 190 pounds. Despite being the only two-time Gatorade Oklahoma Player of the Year in state history, he received just one FBS offer – from head coach Seth Littrell at North Texas. Fine seized the opportunity in Denton.
UNT was coming off a 1-11 season and was looking to completely reshape the program. Fine was a catalyst in that. He won the starting job as a true freshman in 2016 prior to the second week of the season, and has led the Mean Green to three consecutive bowl games and back-to-back nine-win seasons.
Fine already owns North Texas program records for career passing yards, completions, attempts, and most 200- and 300-yard games. By the time his collegiate career comes to a close, Fine will likely own every major passing record in program history.
