DENTON - North Texas women's golf coach Michael Akers announced his program's 2019-20 tournament schedule on Monday, and it features several strong tournament fields as he continues the quest to earn an NCAA tournament bid as a team, coming off last season's breakthrough year that saw senior-to-be Lauren Cox earn an individual bid to the NCAA tournament.
UNT will play four tournaments in the fall after a season-opening dual match against Midwestern State on Aug. 30, at Winstar in Thackerville, Oklahoma. The Mean Green will then travel to five spring tournaments and host the third annual Bruzzy Invitational, which will be back at Lantana Golf Club in Argyle, for the second straight year. The spring season concludes with the Conference USA Championships in Fort Myers, Florida, April 20-22, before UNT hopes to earn an NCAA regional bid.
"I am thrilled to release our 2019-20 tournament schedule," Akers said. "This will be the best schedule that the women's golf team at UNT has ever had the privilege to play. To be the best, you must play against the best. NCAA golf requires a good strength of schedule in order to have the opportunity to gain an at-large bid at the end of the season."
With four returning players from a banner year, including Cox, which saw the program climb in the GolfStat rankings to the highest point (No. 79) in Akers' tenure, he said he believes his team is set up to have unprecedented success this coming season, thanks also in part to a trio of newcomers - two freshmen and a transfer from Texas A&M. They join returners Cox, sophomores-to-be Patricia Sinolungan and Audrey Tan, and junior-to-be Madison Lewis.
"We will have the depth this season to really make noise," Akers said. "Our returners are great and have been working over the summer. The three newcomers will all have an immediate impact on our team. We have made great progress over the past three years, but this is the year I expect us to be playing in May. Lauren advanced last year, which was great, but this year, we want the entire team there."
