Smith Named to Mackey Award Watch List

NEW YORK – Mean Green tight end Kelvin Smith was selected as a member of the Mackey Award watch list, the Friends of John Mackey announced Friday.
Smith, one of the most versatile players on the Mean Green roster, caught 29 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown in 13 appearances. He was also a key component of the North Texas rushing attack, helping pave the way for nearly 2,000 yards rushing and 25 scores on the ground. Smith is expected to again be a big component of the Mean Green offense in 2019.
Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2019 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 5, 2018 and then presented live on December 12, 2019 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
