DENTON – North Texas volleyball has announced its 2019 schedule featuring two home tournaments and seven home Conference USA matches. Â
The 2019 schedule features two NCAA Tournament teams from 2018 and three teams ranked in RPI top 50.
On August 21 North Texas will face SMU in exhibition at 5:30 p.m. in Dallas. The regular season opens at home August 30 with the North Texas Invite, featuring Illinois State, Pepperdine and Tulsa. North Texas opens the tournament with a 9:30Â a.m. match against Illinois State before facing Pepperdine, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
"I'm excited about our competitive non-conference schedule," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "We will compete against different play styles. We'll get to see some experienced teams as well."
North Texas then hits the road September 5-7 to compete in the Cal Poly Tournament in San Luis Obispo, California, facing Cal Poly, San Jose State and Wichita State. The Mean Green defeated Wichita State in the second round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in 2018. North Texas will return to Texas September 12-15 for a tournament hosted by Abilene Christian, facing off against Cal-State Fullerton, Abilene Christian and Prairie View A&M.
The final tournament of the regular season will be hosted in Denton. The North Texas Challenge starts on September 19 with a match against Big 12 opponent Kansas State at 7 p.m. before facing New Mexico on September 20 at 6 p.m. The tournament wraps with a match against Ohio on September 21 at 12:30 p.m.
"This schedule will do nothing but prepare us to compete for another conference championship," Palileo said. "Our goal is to of course compete in the NCAA Championship."
North Texas opens conference play with a weekend at home facing UAB on September 27 at 7 p.m. before hosting C-USA Champions Rice on September 29 at 1 p.m. The weekend will also serve as volleyball alumni weekend.
Western Kentucky comes to Denton on November 8, which will be senior night. The conference schedule wraps at home on November 16 against UTSA.
The C-USA tournament runs November 22-24 hosted by Rice. North Texas will face SMU in Dallas again in an exhibition match on November 30 at 2 p.m. in a tune-up for possible postseason play.
