Torrey Named to Hornung Award Watch List

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Junior running back DeAndre Torrey was selected Thursday as a member of the Paul Hornung Award watch list, the Louisville Sports Commission announced. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation's top college running back.
The Gautier, Mississippi, native contributed in several ways for the Mean Green during their nine-win 2018 season. He carried 175 times for 977 yards (5.6 yards per carry) with 15 touchdowns on the ground. He ranked seventh in FBS in total touchdowns (18) and also caught 25 passes for 205 yards with a pair of receiving scores. Additionally he averaged 27.5 yards per kick return, adding another touchdown.
The Paul Hornung Award, now in its tenth season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville on March 4, 2020.
Nicknamed The Golden Boy, Hornung was a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Notre Dame in 1956 and the NFL's Most Valuable Player with the Green Bay Packers, whose versatility earned him enshrinement in both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame. At Notre Dame, Hornung played every position in the offensive backfield, handled punting and placekicking duties, returned kickoffs, and started at safety on defense. He set an NFL single-season scoring record for the champion Green Bay Packers in 1961 that stood for 46 years.
The 2019 Watch List was compiled by a panel of college football experts based on a combination of 2018 statistics, career performance, SID recommendations, and expectations heading into the 2019 season.
