Men's Basketball Announces C-USA Slate

COMPLETE CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team has announced its 2019-20 Conference USA 18-game schedule.
The Mean Green and third-year head coach Grant McCasland have posted back-to-back 20-plus overall win seasons as well as back-to-back eight-win league seasons.
This coming year, though, the league will look a lot different.
Nine of the 15 2018-19 C-USA All-Conference selections (first team through third team) have graduated, including three of the five first team honorees.
The Mean Green begin league play on Jan. 2 with a road trip to Western Kentucky and then at Marshall on Jan. 4. The Hilltoppers reached the finals of the C-USA Championship a season ago.
Like last season, after every team in C-USA has played each other at least once, every team's the final four opponents will be determined by the standings after the weekend of Feb. 15 and 16. UNT's final scheduled league game before the bonus play is a home matchup with Old Dominion on Feb. 15.
The Monarchs are the defending C-USA Champions and head coach Jeff Jones was named the 2018-19 C-USA Coach of the Year. However, Monarchs guards B.J. Stith —the league's player of the year last season — and Ahmad Caver — first team all-conference selection — have graduated.
Below is the Mean Green's full conference schedule and a few notes headed into each game.
THURSDAY JAN. 2 at WKU
• WKU leads the all-time series record 21-5
• North Texas' last two games against the Hilltoppers have been defeats but both were decided by less than 10 points including a overtime loss two years ago.
• This will be the first time the Mean Green have played in Bowling Green, Kentucky, under McCasland.
• 2018-19 freshman all-American Charles Bassey headlines the roster for WKU.
SATURDAY JAN. 4 at Marshall
• Marshall leads the all-time series record 6-2.
• North Texas and Marshall played twice last season and both games were played in Denton.
• The two team's split the two games last year.
• Marshall's Jon Elmore graduated this past year and leaves as the conference's and the program's all-time leader in points, assists and made three-pointers.
THURSDAY JAN. 9 vs. FIU
• North Texas leads the all-time series record 17-8.
• North Texas beat the Panthers in the first round of the 2019 Conference USA Championship, 71-57.
• Though the two teams played each other three times last year, they never played in Denton.
• FIU's all-conference guard Brian Beard Sr. graduated after tallying just over 1,000 career points in just two seasons with the Panthers.
SATURDAY JAN. 11 vs. FLORIDA ATLANTIC
• North Texas leads the all-time series record 12-6.
• The Mean Green are 6-2 all-time at home versus the Owls
• FAU's second-year head coach Dusty May last year led the Owls to its best start ot a season at the Division I level and won the most games in school history by a first-year head coach since moving to Division I (17).
THURSDAY JAN. 16 at SOUTHERN MISS
• Southern Miss leads the all-time series 7-23
• The Mean Green beat the Golden Eagles in the teams' only matchup last year, 65-62, in Denton.
• North Texas last won in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in 1971.
• Southern Miss' all-conference guards Cortez Edwards and Tyree Griffin graduated after last season.
• USM is under the leadership of first year head coach Jay Ladner.
SATURDAY JAN. 18 at LA TECH
• LA Tech leads the all-time series record 25-10.
• The Mean Green and Bulldogs split their two games last year, as each team won at home.
• LA Tech's DaQuan Bracey, the league's 2016-17 Freshman of the Year, returns for his senior season.
MONDAY JAN. 20 vs. RICE
• North Texas leads the all-time series record 17-8.
• The Mean Green swept Rice last year.
• North Texas beat Rice at home last season, 76-75, on a game-winning layup by Michael Miller with one second left.
• Rice's Chris Mullins was named to the league's all-freshman team last season along with UNT's Umoja Gibson.
THURSDAY JAN. 23 vs. UTSA
• North Texas leads the all-time series 15-12.
• The Mean Green have won two straight home games over the roadrunners.
• North Texas did not play UTSA at home last season.
• The Roadrunners return first-team all-conference guard Jhivvan Jackson and second team all-conference guard Keaton Wallace.
SATURDAY JAN. 25 vs. UTEP
• UTEP leads the all-time series record 10-4.
• The Mean Green beat the Miners 58-51 in El Paso last season in their only matchup alst season.
• Half of UNT's all-time wins over UTEP have come under McCasland.
• UTEP features Efe Odigie who was named to the league's all-freshman team.
• UTEP had five players sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.
SATURDAY FEB. 1 at RICE
• North Texas scored a season-high 103 points last season at Rice in a 16-point win.
• UNT had three players score over 20 points last season in its win at rice
• McCasland is 4-0 all-time versus Rice as the Mean Green's head coach.
THURSDAY FEB. 6 at MIDDLE TENNESSEE
• Middle Tennessee leads the all-time series 15-8.
• The Mean Green beat the Blue Raiders 70-53 in Denton in their only matchup last season.
• UNT's win last season over Middle Tennessee ended a four-game losing streak to them.
• Middle Tennessee's Antonio Green was named the league's newcomer of the year last season and selected third team all-conference.
SATURDAY FEB. 8 at UAB
• UAB leads the all-time series record 4-3.
• Under McCasland, UNT is 1-0 all-time in Birmingham, Alabama.
• UAB's Zack Bryant was named third team all-conference last year.
THURSDAY FEB. 13 vs. CHARLOTTE
• Charlotte leads the all-time series 7-4.
• UNT beat the 49ers in the teams' only meeting last season 73-66. The game was played at Charlotte.
• Roosevelt Smart and Umoja Gibson each scored 19 points in the game last season.
• Charlotte's all-conference guard Jon Davis graduated after last season. He scored over 2,000 career points in his career, making him just the fifth C-USA player to accomplishing that feet.
SATURDAY FEB. 15 vs. OLD DOMINION
• ODU leads the all-time series record 9-0.
• The Monarchs lost to Purdue in the NCAA Tournament last season.
• ODU returns guard Xavier Green who was named to the league's all-defensive team.
• This will be the Mean Green's 2009-10 team reunion game.
