NEW ORLEANS - North Texas quarterback Mason Fine was named to the watch list for the 2019 Manning Award Wednesday. The list includes 30 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2019 season. The winner will be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls conclude.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
The Peggs, Oklahoma, native enters his fourth season as a starter as the FBS' active national leader in career passing yards (9,417) and is the two-time reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year. He leads a Mean Green offense that has averaged 35.1 points per game over the last two seasons.
Fine threw for 3,793 yards, 27 touchdowns to just five interceptions, completed 64.6% of his passes and added two more scores on the ground in 2018.
The list of 10 finalists will be released on Thursday, November 28. The winner will be announced in the week following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Fine enters his senior campaign as a member of several national award watch lists: the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Davey O'Brien, Maxwell, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose and was named the Conference USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year as voted on by the league's head coaches.
The Mean Green open the 2019 season with a white-out game against Abilene Christian on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m. from Apogee Stadium.
