DENTON — North Texas men's basketball 2019 graduate Michael Miller has signed a professional contract with the Den Helder Suns of the Dutch Basketball League.
Miller started 24 games last season for the Mean Green while also battling through injuries. He made two game-winning buckets during the year and will forever be remembered for his emergence and role in leading UNT to the 2018 College Basketball Invitational championship.
Miller was one of the best guards in the nation this past season at scoring while in the paint. The 6-foot-3 Miller had a .517 field goal percentage around the rim.
The Den Helder Suns are a relatively new franchise in the DBL. The club was founded in 2016 and played its first season in 2017-18. Though they're a younger club, in its first two seasons they have featured the league's rookie of the year.
Miller is the second Mean Green player in as many years to sign a professional contract. Last summer, 2018 graduate Shane Tamara signed a professional deal with the Wellington Saints in New Zealand.
After transferring from Shawnee Community College to UNT, Miller averaged 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game during the 2017-18 regular season but during the CBI Miller took his game to another level. In the six-game postseason tournament, he increased his scoring average by almost six points and averaged 2.5 more rebounds per game. Prior to the first round game at South Dakota, Miller famously changed shooting hands from left to right.
The success carried over into his senior season when he increased his scoring average by 7.1 points and his rebound average increased by 3.3. Furthermore, he led North Texas to its best start in school history at 16-1.
The Michigan City, Indiana, native scored 15 or more points eight times during his senior season including a career-high 35 points at home against Arkansas Pine Bluff. In that game Miller set career-highs in every major statistical category.
As the season progressed Miller not only was a scorer, a leader in the locker room but also could be relied upon to do the little things to help the team win. Despite being just 6-foot-3, Miller grabbed 69 offensive rebounds last year which was by far the most for a Conference USA guard. Miller also was second on the team in blocks.
Miller scored the game-winning layup on Dec. 8 versus UT Arlington and on Jan. 19 versus Rice.
His legacy with UNT grew even more at the end of the year when he played through a broken foot in the conference tournament and still grabbed 10 rebounds in the team's first round win over Florida International.
