Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational
Colbert Hills Golf Course | Manhattan, Kansas
Â
The North Texas women's golf team returns to action after opening its season on a successful note last week at the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas. The Mean Green will look to carry on that momentum in an 11-team field.
Â
THE EVENT: The Colbert Hills Golf Course will play at 6,256 yards and will be a par-72 course. The teams will play 36 holes on Sunday with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start, and then conclude the tournament Monday with 18 holes following an 8 a.m., shotgun start.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 11 teams participating in the tournament: Central Arkansas, Florida Gulf Coast, Kansas, Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas State, New Mexico State, North Texas, Rutgers, UT Arlington, Texas State and Tulsa.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Lauren Cox, Katie Finley, Emilie Ricaud, Patricia Sinolungan and Audrey Tan. Marija Jucmane will compete as an individual.
Â
RESULTS: Live results will be posted on GolfStat.com. Full recaps from each day of competition will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of each day.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: North Texas took third at the season opener in Dallas, while competing at the Trinity Forest Invitational. Lauren Cox finished tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard and earned Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors for her effort.
Â
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head Michael Akers took over roughly four years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared as many as 123 spots to break into the top 80, and ended last season 112 spots better than when he arrived in Denton. The Mean Green ended last season ranked No. 89, but climbed as high as No. 79.
Â
AKERS SAYS:Â "We are excited to get to K-State and compete. Our goal is to win the event. There are some similarities between Trinity Forest and Colbert Hills so we should be prepared. We just need to play our normal game. Our confidence should be high after beating some very good teams at SMU."
Â
UP NEXT: North Texas will travel to Austin for the Betsy Rawls Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas, on Oct. 12-13.
