DENTON – With the turning of the calendar to October, basketball season is fast approaching, and the UNT women's team tips off official practice on Monday, with the squad's first practice at The Super Pit coming Tuesday.
Entering her fifth season, head coach and alum Jalie Mitchell has seen the program's win total increase in each of her seasons at the helm and hopes to build on the 18-win season from a year ago when the Mean Green made it to the final of the WBI postseason tournament.
"It's very exciting," Mitchell said. "You're close to (the season) and you have more time to focus on whatever preparation you need. As a team, we've been really looking forward to (today). We knew we had four weeks where we could get a lot of stuff in, which I believe we've done. It's just time to perfect it now.
"We've won more games each and every year, and I think we're on pace to keep that up," Mitchell added. "We've increased our talent and athleticism and increased in just what we're able to do as a team, offensively and defensively. I'm really excited and looking forward to it."
UNT will have a handful of returning contributors with a mix of incoming freshmen who will be expected to contribute immediately, and Mitchell said the newcomers aren't intimidated by what is in front of them.
"We've always counted on new people, whether it's freshmen or experienced players," Mitchell said. "This is what they wanted in the recruiting process, this opportunity to come in and play, and I don't think there's any pressure with it for them. They're competing and they're hungry to not just contribute immediately but to make sure it's in a way that we win championships."
The Mean Green open with an exhibition against TWU on Nov. 3 at The Super Pit before opening the regular season on Nov. 7, against Mid-America Christian at The Super Pit.
