More Depth Has Akers Optimistic For Season

DENTON – Last season, as in each previous year of Michael Akers' tenure as the head women's golf coach at UNT, the Mean Green had their best year under the fourth-year head coach.
This year, Akers expects the same result, but at a whole new level.
After playing much of last season with just five players on the roster, the team often ran into depth problems and saw good outings overcome by a lack of numbers.
This year, Akers said, that will change, and it all begins Monday at the Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas.
"I am extremely excited for this year," Akers said. "We had some great things happen last year, but ultimately our lack of depth kept us out of the postseason as a team. This year, we are deep. I am sure the starting lineup will change throughout the year, and I would assume we will be led by different players in various events."
To Akers' point, senior Lauren Cox, who earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional tournament in Norman last season, led the team in four of its nine tournaments, and tied for the team lead in two others.
Now, with a year of experience under the belts of sophomores Audrey Tan and Patricia Sinolungan, junior Madison Lewis and some key newcomers in transfer Katie Finley (Texas A&M) and touted freshmen Marija Jucmane and Emilie Ricaud, Akers hopes to have some more well-rounded team scores posted.
If that happens consistently, Akers said his team has what it takes to end up playing in the NCAA tournament as an entire squad, and not just a lone individual.
"I am glad Lauren is surrounded by other great players this year," Akers said. "I want the entire team to be at the NCAA Regionals in May."
