MEMPHIS — The North Texas soccer team aims to rebound Friday night as they travel to No. 18 Memphis.
The Mean Green (3-1) and Tigers (3-1) kickoff at 7 p.m. on the Memphis Tigers Network. This will be the first meeting between the two schools who each have long tenured head coaches and have been giants in their respected conferences.
UNT is the defending Conference USA Regular Season and Tournament champions while Memphis is the defending American Athletic Conference Tournament champions after they beat the top seed South Florida 3-0 in the finals.
Mean Green head coach John Hedlund and Tigers head coach Brooks Monaghan have both been with their respected program's from the beginning and have a combined 45 years of head coaching experience at their respected schools. Together they have reached 13 NCAA Tournaments and won 12 league tournament championships.
Both UNT and Memphis enter Friday night's match with one loss to their record and both fell to a Big 12 opponent. North Texas lost at Texas Tech on Sept. 1 and Memphis dropped its road match at Kansas on Aug. 29.
The Tigers bounced back after their loss to Kansas with a 1-0 win over Omaha a few days later. Friday will be UNT's first match since its loss. The Mean Green haven't lost back-to-back matches since 2016. Despite losing the rare consecutive matches that year, they went on to win nine of their next 10 matches and claim the 2016 Conference USA Regular Season crown.
UNT will have a quick turnaround following their match at Memphis. The Mean Green travel to San Antonio on Sunday to face Incarnate Word at 1 p.m. North Texas has never lost to UIW and beat them last season 3-0 in the season opener.
