DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - Former North Texas running back Loren Easly and safety Taylor Robinson are the first former members of the Mean Green to compete in an all-star game this year, as they are set for the Spiral Tropical Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 12, in the Sunshine State.
Easly, who will be wearing No. 24, will be suiting up for the National Team. Easly concluded his North Texas career with 629 rushing yards on 129 carries (4.9 yards per carry), with five touchdowns in 11 appearances. The Houston native also caught six passes for 84 yards for the Mean Green.
Robinson, a two-year starter at safety for North Texas, will be playing for the American Team, and wearing No. 10. Robinson recorded 155 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, had three interceptions, broke up three passes, forced and recovered a fumble and blocked a pair of kicks in 48 career appearances for the Mean Green. As a senior, Robinson posted 63 tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, a forced fumble and a career-best seven pass break-ups.
The duo from Denton arrived in Daytona Beach on Friday, where they went through their registration, had measurements taken and each competed in their first practices. Saturday's schedule includes another set of practices, as well as time set aside to meet with professional scouts.
The Tropical Bowl kicks off at 9 a.m. CT from Spec Martin Stadium on the campus of Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, and will be broadcast live on FloFootball.
Fellow former Mean Green players, quarterback Mason Fine and defensive end LaDarius Hamilton will be in action next week at the 95th annual East-West Shrine Bowl from St. Petersburg, Florida, on Saturday, Jan. 18 on NFL Network.
