UNT Takes Winning Streak To Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi — After holding its last three opponents each to season-low scoring, the North Texas men's basketball team is off to Southern Miss, aiming to extend its three-game winning streak and improve to 4-1 in conference play.
The Mean Green (9-8, 3-1 C-USA) will face the Golden Eagles (4-13, 0-4 C-USA) on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network (95.3 KHYI) or on the tuneIN app. Dave Barnett and Hank Dickenson will have the call on MGSN.
UNT all season has featured one of the nation's top defenses, but familiarity and improved ball movement has led to a drastic improvement on the offensive end as of late.On Thursday, they'll take on a Southern Miss squad who is just a year removed from reaching the Conference USA Tournament semifinals and is now under the direction of first-year head coach Jay Ladner — a 1988 USM graduate and former player.
Both North Texas and Southern Miss are led by its guards who are two of the best floor generals in the league. Since Dec. 2, UNT's Javion Hamlet has led the league in assists (59) and assists per game (5.9). Meanwhile he has also seen a drastic improvement in scoring. Over the last five games, Hamlet has led the team in scoring four times including scoring a career-high 20 points last Saturday versus Florida Atlantic in the team's 81-58 win.
Watson is the Golden Eagle's leading scorer at 13.5 points per game.
JAVION FINDING HIS GROOVE
Newcomer Javion Hamlet has started to take over as the team's floor general. In the team's first seven games, Hamlet had 15 assists and 24 turnovers (.6 A/ TO). But in UNT's last 10 games, he's had 59 assists (5.9 per game) and just 28 turnovers (2.1 A/TO). Over the last 10 games, Hamlet's 59 assists is tops in C-USA.
ZACH ATTACK
After starting the season 20-of-41 (.487) from the field over the first seven games of the year, junior Zachary Simmons is 41-of-55 (.745) in the 10 games since.
HIGH PERCENTAGE
UNT is shooting 47.4% from the field and 38.6% from deep. As of Wednes- day, that ranks 32nd & 14th in the nation, respectively.
EFFECTIVE FG%
UNT's effective field goal percentage (54.0%) ranks first in C-USA and 27th in the nation. Effective field goal percentage is like regular field goal percentage except that it gives 50% more credit for made 3-pointers.
OFFENSIVE RATING
UNT's DJ Draper has an offensive rating of 130.4, which is the 12th best in the nation. An individual offensive rating
is the number of points produced by a player per 100 individual possessions.
