DENTON — Behind a 13-point, 10-assist and zero-turnover performance from Javion Hamlet, the North Texas men's basketball team beat Southern Miss in Hattiesburg for the first time since 1971.
The Mean Green (10-8, 4-1 C-USA) beat the Golden Eagles (4-14, 0-5 C-USA) 72-52 Thursday night at the Reed Green Coliseum. The win extends UNT's winning streak to four in a row and its the third straight opponent they've held under 60 points and beaten by at least 18 points.
"Early in the game I thought (Hamlet) he made all the right plays," said head coach Grant McCasland. "He was dealing and when he's dealing guys are getting good looks and our team is fantastic.
Early paint points by the Golden Eagles kept the Mean Green from breaking open the game. USM scored 16 points in the paint in the first half and made just one 3-pointer.
But in the second-half, North Texas pulled away behind its defense. They held Southern Miss to just 18 second-half points and Hamlet kept the ball moving.
"I'm proud of the entire team tonight," McCasland said.
Along with Hamlet's double-double, the Mean Green were led in scoring by Umoja Gibson's 17 points as he hit five 3-pointers and had three steals on Thursday. James Reese added 13 points and three assists.
North Texas will be back in action on Saturday at Louisiana Tech for a 4 p.m. tip-off. The Bulldogs are also 4-1 in conference. The game will be aired on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network. The Mean Green haven't won in Ruston, Louisiana, since 1952.
