COLLEGE STATION – Aneesa Scott, Bailey Ashmore and Joseph Squire of North Texas track and field each established Mean Green school records at the Ted Nelson Invitational hosted by Texas A&M Friday as the women finished second overall and the men third.
Scott's time of 23.64 in the 200-meter dash also set a meet record and captured first place. Ashmore's mark of 3.88 meters in pole vault gave her runner-up honors, and Squire improved upon his school record in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7.97 seconds to secure second place.
"It was a great day to start the season," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "There were many personal best performances to begin the year. A lot of people opened the season with performances far beyond what they have ever done in the past.
"I was very excited to see Bailey return to full strength and immediately raise the bar to a new school record in the pole vault. Aneesa ran a blistering 200m to open her season, and it will surely be one of the fastest early season national marks. Joseph continues to mature as a high hurdler, and his time may come down a few more ticks by the time the conference meet rolls around," Sheffield said.
Aubrey Schmidt took the 3000-meter run title in a time of 10:16.96, while Gwyneth Garcia took sixth in 10:41.61. For the men, Matthew Morgan came in second at 8:33.24, and Caleb Brouchard finished fourth in 8:45.90.
In the mile run, Alec Esposito clocked a 4:18.93 for a runner-up finish, and Braden Lange came in fourth at 4:19.43. Jacob Franks took second place in pole vault with a mark of 4.91 meters, and Cody Bullard claimed seventh at 4.76. The 4x400-meter relay team of Scott, Lauryn McCollum, Liah Collins and Lyric Choice took second place by finishing in 3:50.57. Sydney Salinas finished third behind Ashmore in pole vault at 3.58 meters, and Mary Piercy was fifth at 3.43.
Third place finishers included Amaris Chavez in the 5000 meters (19:20.93), Haley Walker in the weight throw (17.71 meters), and Antonio Delacruz in the 60-meter dash (6.80 seconds).
Taking four place honors were Davonye Jones in the 200 (21.90), Jaleisa Shaffer in shot put (14.48 meters), Charlotte Kerr in the high jump, (1.63), and Lyric Choice in the 60-meter hurdles (8.86).
Chris Samaniego earned a pair of sixth-place finishes in weight throw (15.61) and shot put (14.71). Macayla Needham was seventh in shot put (13.59), and Kendall Maples concluded in the eighth spot (14.40).
"I was pleased overall with the outcome of the meet. We want to continue to build our confidence for competing in Conference USA. We look forward to the coming weeks as competition demands grow," Sheffield said.
