DENTON – The North Texas tennis team capped off a successful weekend with a 6-1 win over New Mexico State on Sunday afternoon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green (2-0) only lost one of 14 matches in their two dual meets this weekend and have manufactured some momentum heading into the rest of the spring season.
Senior Alexandra Heczey led the charge with a 6-0, 6-4 singles victory after teaming up with freshman Hala Khaled Badwy for a 6-3 victory over their NMSU opponent.
"This is my senior year and my last chance to play here," Heczey said. "I'm also co-captain and I need to be accountable for my team. I just want to show them that I'm here for them, and I'm going to try to get the point for our team."
For the second straight meet, North Texas won all three doubles matches. Aside from Heczey and Badwy's win, junior Nidhi Surapaneni and Maria Ponomareva defeated their opponent in a thrilling 7-5 win, culminated by an overhead smash from Surapaneni on the front row.
Two of the three Mean Green freshmen that played on Sunday improved to 2-0 on the season in singles matches. Kexuan Zhou won her match 6-0, 6-3 before Sophia Hummel won the last match of the day in tiebreakers (6-2, 6-1, 14-12).
"This weekend was big for us," Heczey said. "It's really nice to go into the next match with positivity knowing that we have what it takes to win. We just want to carry this momentum into the next match."
North Texas will be back at the Waranch Tennis Complex on Saturday, Jan. 25 to take on Lamar.

On today's match: "We've just got to keep growing. We had several freshmen out there that really competed today, and I was super excited about that."
On hosting the C-USA tournament: "Our crowd was great today at the end. Playing at home is a very powerful tool, especially now that we learned we'll be hosting the conference tournament later in the season."
