UNT remains unbeaten with win over Lamar

DENTON – The North Texas tennis team defeated Lamar 6-1 on a windy Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten in the 2020 season.
The Mean Green (3-0) won the first six matches against Lamar (0-2) before dropping the final match in tiebreakers. North Texas has won 25 of its 27 total matches this season.
North Texas started the day by winning all three of its doubles matches by comfortable margins. Sophia Hummel and Kexuan Zhou began the day with a dominating 6-2 doubles victory before the powerful duo of Alexandra Heczey and Hala Khaled Badwy defeated their Lamar opponents 6-2 to clinch one point for the Mean Green. The Mean Green have yet to drop a doubles match this spring.
"Playing in the weather was very difficult today, but I liked how we found different ways to win our matches," Badwy said. "We managed our strategies very well. It's nice to have such a fast start to the season."
During singles, senior team captain Haruka Sasaki controlled her match from the first serve en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Badwy was the second Mean Green player off the courts with a 6-1, 6-3 win over her opponent.
Zhou clinched the game winning point for North Texas with an impressive forehand shot to win 6-3, 6-2. The win lifted the freshman from Changsha, China to 3-0 in singles matches this season.
Nidhi Surapaneni and Maria Ponomareva picked up the next two wins for North Texas before Sophia Hummel dropped her first match of the season in tiebreakers (6-4, 3-6, 7-10).
North Texas will host Northwestern State next Saturday, Feb. 1. The match is scheduled to start around noon.
"This has been awesome," Ponomareva said. "We have four freshmen, and they have all stepped up. This team is working so hard right now, and it's just really cool to watch our entire team grow each match."

On today's match: "Everybody stepped up today, and we're really starting to get confident and trust each other. Collectively, we're doing all the right things, and the kids are growing up extremely fast. They're really buying into this whole team culture and working hard for wins."
