DENTON — The North Texas tennis team is off to a blazing 3-0 start and has won 19 of 21 possible points and dropped just four sets all year. The Mean Green host Northwestern State on Saturday at noon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
Saturday, North Texas will honor the Chinese Lunar New Year and freshman Kexuan Zhou who is from Changhsa, China.
Saturday will be the Mean Green's last home match before they go on a three-match road trip and return to Denton on Feb. 14.
"We are looking forward to another opportunity to improve and play at home against a well coached team," said head coach Sujay Lama.
Despite being one of the youngest teams in the state, the Mean Green underclassmen have carried the bottom of the lineup to its best three-game start to a season in program history. Through three matches, the five newcomers combined have lost just two singles matches all year. Meanwhile, the Mean Green's savvy upperclassmen have yet to drop a singles match. v
Saturday will be the Mean Green's third match against a Southland Conference opponent. UNT beat Stephen F. Austin and Lamar by a combined score of 13-1. UNT's three-match winning streak is tied for its longest winning streak all of last year. The last time North Texas won four straight matches was in 2017.
"We have been working hard on our fitness and cleaning up our game," Lama said. "The focus and energy of this team has been outstanding. Four matches in a span of seven days is going to be a great test for us and we are excited for the challenge."
After Saturday, UNT hits the road to play three very competitive opponents: Sam Houston State, Arizona and Kansas State.
