DENTON — The North Texas women's tennis team is going for its first 3-0 start in over 15 years on Saturday when they host Lamar at noon.
The Mean Green (2-0) have destroyed their first two opponents, beating them by a combined score of 13-1. They've dropped just two sets in the first two matches of the year and have breezed their way through doubles competition. On Saturday they'll face a familiar opponent in the Cardinals who they've played two of the last three years and beaten them each of those two times by a combined score of 12-2.
North Texas owns a 64.7 percent winning percentage against schools from Texas over the last 3-plus years.
The Mean Green's two seniors have never lost to Lamar and have led the charge early in the season. Alexandra Heczey and Haruka Sasaki have a combined 3-0 record so far this year in singles and have led what is one of the youngest teams in the state of Texas.
"I'm so proud of the work this team has put in so far," said associate head coach Rodrigo de Almeida. "We have been focusing our attention on the process and seeing daily and constant improvement. This next match is another chance to apply strategies we have been working on and continue to build on this positive momentum."
Saturday is UNT's third home match in a stretch of four straight home matches before they go on the road for three straight matches, including traveling to Tucson to play Arizona.
After Saturday, the Mean Green will have a week off before hosting Northwestern State.
