DALLAS — North Texas men's basketball guard Javion Hamlet was named the Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday.
In three games this past week, Hamlet averaged 20 points per game at a 54.3 percent clip and made 19-of-20 at the free throw line. He averaged 5.3 assists per game and committed zero turnovers and had just three total fouls as he helped lead UNT (14-8, 8-1 C-USA) to three wins and extend its winning streak to eight in a row.
"I'm thankful for my teammates," Hamlet said. "This wouldn't be possible without them or our coaches. It's an honor to be part of this team and to help us win. I want to do whatever is needed to help us win and get closer to our ultimate goal of a championship."
Hamlet leads C-USA in league play in assists, assists per game and his 2.9 assist/turnover ratio is by far the best in the conference — the next highest is 1.7.
Hamlet hasn't committed a turnover in the last 197 minutes of playing time.
The Mean Green are currently riding an eight-game winning streak, all in conference play. It's the longest conference winning streak by UNT since the 2009-10 team ended the regular season on a eight-game winning streak. In 2009-10, North Texas went on to win three games in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and win the league title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. During UNT's eight-game winning streak, they've beaten five teams by at least 18 points and have won three road games.
UNT plays next on Saturday at Rice at 2 p.m. The Mean Green beat the Owls 79-59 in Denton on Jan. 20. Saturday's game will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network (95.3 KHYI).
