MIAMI – When the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs take the field at Hard Rock Stadium for Super Bowl LIV on Sunday night, former Mean Green running back Jeffery Wilson will be realizing a childhood dream.
The former North Texas standout has played a key role in his second NFL season for the NFC champions in limited action. Wilson recorded five regular season touchdowns for the 13-3 Niners, the first five of his professional career.
Wilson has scored touchdowns on 16.7% of his touches in 2019, certainly making the most of his opportunities. He carried 27 times for 105 yards and four scores and caught three passes for 34 yards and another score.
That receiving score came in a pretty big moment for a team that clinched their division crown and number one overall seed in the NFC in the final moments of the NFL season up in Seattle. Wilson's lone offensive snap of Week 11's win over the Arizona Cardinals was a 25-yard scoring strike from Jimmy Garoppolo to put the 49ers on top 30-26 with just 32 seconds remaining. The win pushed San Francisco to 9-1 at the time.
Other highlights from Wilson's season included back-to-back two-touchdown performances in a 41-17 win at Cincinnati and a 24-20 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Wilson signed as an undrafted free agent ahead of the 2018 NFL season following a stellar career in Denton. The Elkhart, Texas, native finished his career fourth all-time on the program's rushing list (3,205 yards), third in career rushing touchdowns (32) and fourth in program history in all-purpose yardage (4,009).
Wilson, who has been inactive since Week 15, may or may not be suiting up on Sunday, however, his impact on the 2019 season for the potential Super Bowl champion 49ers cannot be denied.
Tune in Sunday night at 5:30 p.m. CT on Fox as the 49ers do battle with the Chiefs to see if Wilson will be celebrating on the field at Hard Rock Stadium.
