DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team, which is in first-place of the Conference USA standings takes its league-best eight-game winning streak to Rice on Saturday for a 2 p.m. scheduled tip-off.
Saturday's contest will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and the Mean Green Sports Network (95.3 KHYI).
The Mean Green (14-8, 8-1 C-USA) have the nation's fourth longest conference winning streak (8) and if they beat the Owls (9-13, 1-8 C-USA) on Saturday will set a program-record for most consecutive regular season conference wins and set the program-record for best start to league play.
Rice is a familiar opponent for UNT and one they've had considerable success against under third-year head coach Grant McCasland. North Texas beat the Owls in Denton on Jan. 20, 79-59. McCasland has never lost to Rice (5-0) as the Mean Green's head coach.
Last year at Rice, North Texas scored a season-high 103 points and beat the Owls 103-87. Four UNT players scored in double figures and three of the four scored over 20 points.
HIGHEST RANKED IN DFW
KenPom ranks UNT (63) ahead of TCU (65), SMU (74) and UT Arlington (114). The only Texas schools ranked ahead of UNT are Baylor (3), Houston (23) and Texas Tech (25).
GOING FOR FOUR STRAIGHT
North Texas has won three straight road conference games (at Marshall, at Southern Miss and at LA Tech). The last time they won four straight road conference games was during the 1991-92 season when UNT played in the Southland Conference and was led by head coach Jimmy Gales. They won at Sam Houston St., at Northwestern St., at Northeast Louisiana and at Southwest Texas before losing at
UT Arlington. UNT went 13-6 in the SLC that season and was 15-14 overall in 1991-92. They'd lose to Northeast Louisiana in the second round of the SLC Tournament in San
Antonio. No current UNT player had been born yet.
EIGHT IN A ROW
UNT has won eight consecutive conference games. The last time they did that was the 1987-88 season when they ended the regular season on a eight-conference-game winning streak. UNT played in the Southland Conference and made its first NCAA Tournament that year. They'd earn a No. 15 seed and lose in the first round to second seeded North Carolina (83-65) in Salt Lake City. The Tar Heels went on to the Elite Eight before losing to Steve Kerr led Arizona. Since moving from the NAIA ranks in 1957, the Mean Green have never won nine straight conference games.
MAC VERSUS TEXAS SCHOOLS
Third-year head coach Grant McCasland is on a six-game winning streak versus schools from Texas. The last loss came on Jan. 12, 2019 at UTSA (76-74). He is 15- 4 (.789) all-time versus Texas schools as UNT's head coach.
