Cox Gets C-USA Nod After Strong Debut

DALLAS - After a strong final round in tough conditions on Monday at the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Oklahoma, Mean Green senior Lauren Cox surged up the leaderboard to tie for third place at the Sooners' tournament loaded with national powerhouses.
For her performance, Cox was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week, the league announced Thursday.
It marks the third time Cox has earned the award in her career with the first two coming last season.Â
Cox shot a 71-70-68 for a three-round score of 209 top help lead North Texas to a fourth-place finish in a field that featured seven teams that finished last season ranked in the top 50 nationally. She finished the tournament with 10 birdies and helped the Mean Green rewrite the record book with a new program-record 281 in the opening round of the tournament.
"I am very excited for Lauren to be named Golfer of the Week," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "She started off a little slow at OU but when conditions worsened in the final round, she rose to the occasion. To finish in third place against this extremely good field speaks volumes, as to her game and our program."
Cox and the Mean Green will return to action on Oct. 10-11, in the Betsy Rawls Invitational at Austin's UT Golf Club.
