FORT WORTH - North Texas quarterback Jason Bean earned national recognition from the Davey O'Brien Award Monday, as a member of it's Great 8 list for week seven, following Bean's outstanding performance in the Mean Green's road win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
Bean entered the game against Middle Tennessee with the Mean Green down 21-7 early in the second quarter. The redshirt sophomore was a game-changer, accounting for 350 total yards and five touchdowns in a little under three quarters, while leading North Texas to a 52-35 win on the road. Bean completed 12-17 passes for 181 yards and a pair of touchdowns with no interceptions, while rushing 10 times for a career-high 169 yards and three scores as the Mean Green outscored the Blue Raiders 45-14 with Bean in the game. The 350 yards accounted for 46% of North Texas' total of 768 yards, a new program record, and also the second-highest offensive output in college football this season (UCF put up 798 this week in a losing effort). Bean accounted for a touchdown run of four yards and a pair of scores from 48 yards out. His touchdown passes were of nine yards to Deonte Simpson and 55 yards to the nation's leading receiver, Jaelon Darden. Bean led the Mean Green to its first road win since 11/27/18 at UT San Antonio, and helped UNT snap a three-game skid.
By earning a spot on the Davey O'Brien Award Great 8 list, Bean is automatically added to the midseason watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award.
The Davey O'Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O'Brien Foundation has given away more than $1 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
