STILLWATER, Okla. – The UNT women's golf team wrapped up its fall competition schedule on Friday in miserable weather conditions at Karsten Creek Golf Club in the Cowgirl Classic and finished in fifth place in the loaded field after entering the day in fourth place.
The Mean Green, which entered the tournament ranked sixth in the country in Golfweek's new national poll, shot a 35-over-par 323 on Friday as the teams battled gusty winds and temperatures in the 40s. They were passed by No. 10 Kansas State, which finished six shots ahead of North Texas for the tournament.
"Today certainly was not good for us," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Katie is the only player on our roster with experience in cold conditions. It is nice to play poorly and still finish in fifth. We have an extremely good team that has yet to reach our potential."
Senior Lauren Cox led the way for the Mean Green, finishing tied for 10th place despite a rough day Friday, thanks to her tournament-low round of 67 - the only round in the whole tournament to break 70 - in the second of two rounds on Thursday. Junior Audrey Tan led the way for the team on Friday, shooting a 4-over 76 and finishing the tournament in a tie for 20th place at 16-over par.
UNT was one of only two non-Big 12 teams in the field, which featured several teams that ended last season ranked in the top 50 of GolfStat's national poll. The first rankings of the 2020-21 season are set to be released on Nov. 17. However, Golfweek released its initial rankings this week, and the Mean Green checked in at No. 6 nationally, while seven of the nine teams in the field this week were ranked in the top 10.
The Mean Green now enter the offseason after a strong fall that saw them turn in three very solid showings against Big 12 competition - at Oklahoma, Texas and Oklahoma State. The Mean Green are set to return to competition in the spring at a tournament and on a date still to be announced.
"I am very excited for the spring season and to add (signee) Shreya (Pal) to the roster," Akers said. "The ladies know they need to work hard in the offseason, and we aim to peak in April and May."
