DALLAS - Lauren Cox's second-round showing at the Cowgirl Classic in Stillwater, Oklahoma, last week stood out to everyone involved in the loaded tournament at Oklahoma State's home course, Karsten Creek Golf Club.
When Cox fired seven birdies in the second of two rounds on that opening day to shoot a 5-under-par 67, she drew the attention of everyone involved, including the Oklahoma State coach, who made a point to congratulate UNT head coach Michael Akers on his star player's accomplishment.
Not only was the 67 the best round of the tournament, but it was the only one to break 70 throughout the three rounds in miserable, cold and windy conditions. Cox finished tied for 10th in a field featuring several nationally ranked teams and players and led her team to a fifth-place finish. She led the field in Par 3 scoring (4-under) and was tied for second in Par 5 scoring (4-under), and she tied for second in the field with 11 birdies.
For her performance, Cox earned her second Conference USA Golfer of the Week honor this month and the fourth of her decorated career, the league announced on Thursday.
"I am very pleased to see Lauren be honored again by C-USA," Akers said. "The second round at Oklahoma State she shot was truly amazing in those conditions. The OSU coach actually asked me about it and was impressed. I was also happy how she finished the final round. Lauren got off to a rough start (in the third round) but kept fighting. I watched her play the final four holes and she birdied three of them and lipped out for birdie on the fourth. Lauren Cox is a fighter in every sense of the word, and I look forward to the spring season to watch Lauren and team continue to move forward."
Cox also won the award on Oct. 1, after the team's first tournament of the fall season in Norman, Oklahoma, when she finished tied for third at the Schooner Fall Classic.
