DENTON – Quincy Noble made the most of her North Texas debut in an 87-71 Mean Green season opening win over Tarleton with a team-high 17 points Wednesday night inside The Super Pit.
Noble put up 12 points in the second quarter to bring North Texas (1-0) back from an 18-13 first quarter deficit. The offense for the Mean Green came to life after the first break as the team responded with 31 points within the next 10 minutes to take a 44-33 lead at the half.
UNT controlled the boards with a 43-31 advantage over the Texans (0-1) and handed out 14 assists compared to three from Tarleton. The 31 points scored in the second quarter were the highest total since last season when the Mean Green put up 34 in a win over UTSA Feb. 22. During the 2019-20 season, North Texas eclipsed the 80-point mark just twice.
"It's really a collective effort," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "I think that's what it's going to be throughout the season. Whatever minutes you have own them, and the next person that comes in will do the same thing."
N'Yah Boyd scored 14 points and tallied a game-high six assists, while Tommisha Lampkin recorded a dozen points in the final quarter in her first contest with the Mean Green. Madison Townley pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, and Lampkin added seven.
"It felt really good being out there with the team," Noble said. "My teammates having faith in me really sparked me getting back on track."
