AUSTIN – North Texas women's basketball will compete in their first road game of the season against the Texas Longhorns Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center.
About the Mean Green
North Texas picked up an 87-71 season-opening win over Tarleton Nov. 25 led by redshirt sophomore Quincy Noble's 17 points. Sophomore N'Yah Boyd scored 14, and freshman Tommisha Lampkin added a dozen. During 2019-20, UNT concluded the season by winning three of the last four regular season contests before being defeated by Charlotte at the Conference USA tournament. The Mean Green finished with an overall record of 12-18 and 6-12 in league play.
About the Longhorns
Texas began the season with a 90-51 win over SMU under first year head coach Vic Schaefer. Charli Collier put up a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds while Celeste Taylor notched 24 points. The Longhorns were picked to finish second in the Big 12 Coaches Poll with Collier being named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team and Taylor claiming a spot on the Honorable Mention team.
History between the squads
The Longhorns hold a 14-0 all-time advantage over the Mean Green in a series that began during the 1978-79 season. The teams took a hiatus from 2011 until 2018 when they met back up in Denton where the Mean Green outscored the No. 8/11 Longhorns for two quarters but were eventually overtaken in a 64-54 loss. Last season, the teams traveled to Hawai'i to compete in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown as North Texas stuck tight with the Longhorns but fell, 63-57.
Last meeting between the teams
HONOLULU (Nov. 20, 2019) – After opening up play in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown on Friday with a win over host Hawai'i, the Mean Green faced a stiffer challenge on Saturday with a Lone Star showdown against Texas, and UNT fought tooth and nail before falling just short in a 63-57 loss.
The Mean Green (3-4, 0-0 C-USA) went toe-to-toe with the Longhorns (4-3, 0-0 Big 12) for much of the first half and held a 24-23 lead over Texas with just less than six minutes to play in the half before the Longhorns went on a 14-0 run to close the second quarter and take a 37-24 lead to the break.
The Mean Green had perhaps their most well-rounded offensive game of the season, as four players scored in double figures, led by freshman guard Randi Thompson's 15 points off the bench on 5-of-9 shooting. Senior post Anisha George had 11 points and seven rebounds to go with two steals and three blocked shots. Freshmen Destinee McDowell and Jazion Jackson added 11 and 10 points, respectively, to go with eight and six rebounds, respectively. Redshirt junior forward Madison Townley scored six points and pulled down nine boards, as UNT outrebounded Texas 42-38.
Back In Austin
Three-quarters of the North Texas coaching staff will head to familiar ground for Sunday's matchup. Head coach Jalie Mitchell spent three seasons as an assistant coach at UT from 2012-15 and took the team to the Sweet 16 in 2015. Associate head coach Jamie Carey spent the past four seasons on the coaching staff for Texas, her alma mater, including the past two years as associate head coach where from 2002-05 she starred for the Longhorns. During her time on the Texas staff, the teams compiled a record of 95-37 (.720) for an average of 24 wins per season, earned three NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to a pair of NCAA Sweet 16s. Assistant coach Kelby Jones returned to Denton after spending the past four seasons as a member of the Texas women's basketball staff, most recently serving as the program's basketball analyst coordinator.
A Scoring Uptick
The Mean Green put up 87 points in the win over Tarleton, 22 points more than their season average in 2019-20. North Texas eclipsed the 80-point threshold just twice last year. Against the Texans, the team knocked down eight 3-pointers, a feat they accomplished three times all of last season.
