DALLAS — North Texas point guard and reigning Conference USA Player of the Year Javion Hamlet was voted by the league's coaches to the 10-man C-USA Men's Basketball Preseason Team as announced by the league on Thursday.
The redshirt senior who led the Mean Green men's basketball program in 2020 to its first regular season league title in 31 years also led C-USA in assists (95), assists per game (5.3), assists/turnover ratio (2.7) and was fourth in scoring (17.9 points per game) during league play a year ago.
"I'm honored and thankful to have been recognized and named to the all-conference team," Hamlet said. "But at the end of the day getting better every day and winning championships is our only focus."
This is the first time Hamlet has been recognized to the honor and he's just the second UNT men's basketball student-athlete to be named C-USA Preseason All-Conference. Roosevelt Smart ('20) was named C-USA Preseason All-Conference for the 2018-19 season.
Along with winning the Conference USA regular season championship last season, the Mean Green won a program-best 14 league games (14-4). They started league play 8-1 last year, which was their best start in 31 years. They went on an eight-game winning streak during conference play, the longest under head coach Grant McCasland who is entering his fourth season.
Last season UNT beat then defending champs Old Dominion — the program's first win over the Monarchs. They also won at Louisiana Tech for the first time since 1952 and they beat Western Kentucky at home to claim the regular season crown and an automatic berth into the NIT.
In addition to being C-USA Player of the Year, Hamlet was the C-USA Newcomer of the Year, C-USA First Team All-Conference, NABC First Team All-District, USBWA All-District, Dave Campbell's All-Texas First Team and became the first UNT student-athlete to be named C-USA Male Athlete of the Year.
C-USA also announced on Thursday the Preseason Coaches' Poll. UNT, who last season were picked to finish in seventh before they went on to win the title, received three first place votes this year from the 14 head coaches. However, WKU was picked first this year by receiving 11 first-place votes.
