TYLER, Texas - North Texas receiver Jaelon Darden was named a semifinalist for the prestigious Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler announced Thursday.
Darden had a record-shattering season in Denton, setting several program records for his career, as well as rewriting some single-season records in the nine-game 2020 regular season. Darden, who recently announced his declaration for the 2021 NFL Draft, forgoing his remaining eligibility, became the Mean Green's career program record-holder for receptions (230), receiving yards (2,782) and receiving touchdowns (38). Also a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist, Darden caught 74 passes (4th nationally) for 1,190 yards (third nationally) and a program-record 19 touchdowns. His 19 receiving scores also leads the Football Bowl Subdivision, with four more than the next closest contender (DeVonta Smith from Alabama). Darden had six 100-yard receiving games, two of which went for 200-plus and four games with three-plus receiving touchdowns, including one with four, which ties for the most in a single game this season by any player in the country. He has scored a touchdown on 25.7% of his catches and 62.2% of his receptions resulted in either a first down or touchdown.
