North Texas volleyball associate head coach Carrie Gurnell was selected to be a part of the inaugural Pac-12 Diversity Mentorship Program last week. Â Â
Â
The women's volleyball coaches of the Pac-12 Conference launched the Diversity Mentorship Program with the purpose to strengthen the group of minority candidates for NCAA volleyball coaching positions. Six mentees were selected from an applicant pool that consisted of minority assistant and head coaches who were early on in their careers and passionate about coaching volleyball.
The 12 coaches involved in the program – six Pac-12 mentors and the six mentees – are driven to promote diversity among the sport and pave a path for future minority volleyball coaches.
Â
Gurnell is paired with UCLA head coach Mike Sealy, who has 15 years of coaching experience, including the last 10 years as a head coach for the Bruins' women's volleyball program.
Â
"I am ecstatic to be paired with UCLA and Coach Sealy," Gurnell said. "I'm grateful to the Pac-12 and their dedication and investment toward this initiative. I'm looking forward to going through the process, and I can't wait to get rolling."
Â
Gurnell will have the opportunity to travel to the UCLA campus for in-person training with Sealy, as well as participate in regular meetings and discussion sessions with other coaching staffs and program administrators.
Â
"I am excited and honored to be a part of the Pac-12 Diversity Mentorship Program," Sealy said on the PAC-12 Diversity Mentorship Instagram. "I am looking forward to exchanging ideas and experiences to continue bridging the gap between coaches of different backgrounds. Every coach involved in this program will have an opportunity to broaden their current scope of the game and life in general. I am excited to see what far-reaching effects transpire."
Â
Other Pac-12 institutions involved with the program include Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Stanford and Washington.
