DALLAS - Mean Green senior receiver Jaelon Darden was named Conference USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the league office anounced Monday. Darden had a record-breaking performance this past week against Louisiana Tech for North Texas.
Darden set new program records for career receiving touchdowns (34) and single-season receiving touchdowns (15). The Houston native hauled in eight passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns. It marked Darden's ninth straight game with at least one touchdown catch, dating back to the 2019 season finale against UAB. He remains the FBS and Conference USA leader in receiving touchdowns with 15 through just eight games. He became the program record-holder for career receiving touchdowns, breaking a tie with Ron Shanklin (1967-69), who had 31 throughout his storied career, in the first quarter with a 13-yard touchdown grab, where Darden took a wide receiver screen and evaded several Bulldog defenders on his way to paydirt. Darden's 33-yard touchdown in the third quarter made him the program record-holder in single-season receiving scores, breaking another tie with Shanklin, who had 13 in his 1967 season. Darden also scored on a screen early in the fourth quarter to pull the Mean Green within 11. This marked Darden's FBS-leading third game of the season with three receiving touchdowns, and fifth such game in the past two seasons.
Â
Darden's eight receptions give him 66 on the season and he is now second all-time in program history in career catches with 222. Darden's 135 receiving yards marked his fifth game this season with 100-plus yards receiving and eighth of his career. He also moved into second place all-time in career receiving yards at North Texas with 2,609. Darden surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career, and is just the fifth player in program history to do so.
Â
Darden, a sure-fire All-America candidate, has 66 catches for 1,017 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns through eight games for the Mean Green.
