DENTON — The North Texas tennis team is back home to host a pair of Conference USA matches this weekend.
The Mean Green (5-2), who had the first 5-0 start in over 15 years this season, host Louisiana Tech on Friday at 2 p.m. and then UTEP on Sunday at noon. UNT beat the Lady Techsters 7-0 last year and beat UTEP 4-0. Every returner contributed to last season's LA Tech win. Junior Nidhi Surapaneni won her ingles match last year versus the Miners.
This weekend's matches come after a nice break for North Texas who faced a challenging three-match road trip that included facing Kansas State and Arizona.
"We have had some time to reflect and work on the areas that got exposed last weekend against two good teams," said head coach Sujay Lama. "We have had very productive practices and we are excited to play two conference opponents at home. Our next four matches are against conference opponents so we have an aggressive mindset from the get go."
Last season, North Texas reached the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Mean Green have had a lot of success in conference matches under Lama. They've won nearly 75 percent of all regular season conference matches under Lama.
The Mean Green have gotten off to their hot start thanks to their depth that has been fueled by their newcomers. Freshmen Sophia Hummel, Kexuan Zhou and Hala Khaleed Badwy and sophomore Maria Ponomareva led the newcomer charge for UNT. Furthermore, veteran leadership by Alexandra Heczey, Haruka Sasaki and Surapaneni has the team stability feeling good even through challenging roadtrips.
Sunday will be Hungarian Culture Day at the Waranch Tennis Complex to honor senior Alexandra Heczey, who is from Budapest.
