Tennis Holds Off LA Tech For 4-3 Victory

DENTON — The North Texas tennis team got back to its winning ways with a 4-3 victory over Louisiana Tech Friday afternoon in what was a four-hour match.
The Mean Green's (6-2) Nidhi Surapaneni clinched the victory at No. 3 singles to put UNT up 4-2. But its was UNT's Maria Ponomareva who had the momentum changing victory at No. 2.
"My match was very close in the first and second set so I was always on my toes. When the second set was happening, Maria's comeback in the third set helped me a lot because she stayed on the court longer.," Surapaneni said. "I felt like I adjusted well today. Overall, I'm very proud of this team and the way everyone is fighting for each other on the court."
Trailing 5-2 in the third set, Ponomareva fought all the way back to beat her opponent 7-5 in the third set at No.2 singles. Ponomareva's victory put UNT up 3-2 and put Surapaneni in position to clinch the match with LA Tech right on the Mean Green aiming to take a lead.
Surapaeni had to go to a third set as well to win her singles match, but the veteran didn't play around as she won her third set with no hesitation, 6-0.
UNT's first singles victory came at No. 4 where Hala Khaled Badwy put away her opponent in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. It came on the heels of an impressive doubles victory for North Texas who withstood a fierce LA Tech doubles team. Sophia Hummel and Kexuan Zhou clinched the doubles point victory with a 7-5 win at the No. 3 position.
North Texas remains home as they host UTEP on Sunday at noon.
