Â
The North Texas women's golf team returns to action to full tournament play after a one-day competition a couple of weeks ago as the Mean Green make their inaugural trip to the Sugar Bowl.
Â
THE EVENT: The English Turn Golf & Club will play as a par-73 course at 6,336 yards. The teams will play 18 holes per day with tee times the first two days starting at 9 a.m., and a shotgun start on the final day at 8 a.m.
Â
THE FIELD: There are 15 teams participating in the tournament: Colorado State, No. 47 Denver, No. 10 Florida, No. 23 Houston, Iowa, No. 32 Miami, No. 13 Michigan State, NC State, No. 57 North Texas, SMU, Southern Miss, South Alabama, Tulane, Tulsa and UAB.
Â
REPRESENTING UNT: Competing for the Mean Green will be Lauren Cox, Audrey Tan, Patricia Sinolungan and Audrey Tan, Katie Finley and Marija Jucmane. Emilie Ricaud will compete as an individual.
Â
RESULTS: Final results will be posted on GolfStat.com. A full recap will be posted on MeanGreenSports.com at the end of the day.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: North Texas finished fifth out of six teams in a one-day, 36-hole tournament hosted by SMU at Dallas Athletic Club. Tan and Jucmane, who was competing as an individual, led the way for North Texas, tying for 13th.
Â
MOVING UP: North Texas has made significant strides since head Michael Akers took over roughly four years ago. The Mean Green were ranked No. 201 following the 2015-16 season, and since Akers arrived in Denton, UNT has soared as many as 123 spots to break into the top 80, and ended last season 112 spots better than when he arrived in Denton. The Mean Green ended last season ranked No. 89, but climbed as high as No. 79. Now, the team is ranked No. 57 in the latest GolfStat poll.
Â
AKERS SAYS: "The ladies have been working hard and we have been creative in preparation with the recent rain," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "Marija seems to have stepped up her game recently. Overall, the team seems to be improving each week. The ladies broke par as a team during qualifying at Lantana last week. This is usually a good indicator that we are tournament-ready."
Â
UP NEXT: North Texas will have a quick turnaround when it travels to The Woodlands to play in the ICON Invitational, hosted by Houston, on Feb. 24-25.
