Hamlet Voted Newcomer of the Year
3/10/2020 2:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
DALLAS — For the second time in as many days, the North Texas men's basketball team's Javion Hamlet has been named to a Conference USA honor no other Mean Green basketball player in program history has. On Tuesday it was announced by the league office that he had been voted the C-USA Newcomer of the Year.
Hamlet, a Northwest Florida State College transfer, has started every game this year for the C-USA regular season champion Mean Green (20-11, 14-4 C-USA). Of all the league's newcomers, Hamlet led in scoring (17.9 ppg), assists (95), assist/turnover ratio (2.7) and free throw percentage (.883) in league play. He was third in field goal percentage (.529) among all newcomers.
The 6-foot-4 guard was voted first team all-conference on Monday, making him the first player in program history to be named C-USA First Team All-Conference. UNT joined the league for the 2013-14 season.
He's the fourth Mean Green men's basketball player to be named a league's newcomer of the year. The last was Collin Dennis after the 2007-08 season when UNT played in the Sun Belt Conference.
The other two former North Texas basketball players to be voted Newcomer of the Year were Kendrick Davis in 2006 (Sun Belt Conference) and Donnell Hayden in 1991 when the Mean Green played in the Southland Conference.
Hamlet is the first Mean Green men's basketball player to take home multiple postseason conference honors in the same season since Tony Mitchell was voted the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference after the 2011-12 season. Overall, Hamlet is just the 11th player in program history to earn multiple postseason conference honors in the same season. Along with Mitchell, Hamlet is just the fourth Mean Green basketball player in the last 20 years to accomplish that feat. Josh White in 2007-08 and Dennis the same season are the other two.
The 2020 C-USA Basketball Championships are March 11-14 at the Star in Frisco. Ticket packages can be purchased here. The Mean Green women's basketball team plays its first round game on Wednesday at 2 p.m. CT. The UNT men's team has a first round bye and won't play until Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.
