Thursday at 6 p.m., the regular season champion Men Green begin the 2020 league tournament as they take on the No. 9 seed Florida Atlantic Owls (17-15, 8-10 C-USA) in the quarterfinal round at The Star in Frisco. C-USA has implement a restricted attendance procedure for the remainder of the 2020 Conference USA Basketball Championships at The Star after consultation with the NCAA, local authorities and related health and safety officials.
Thursday's game will be broadcasted on Stadium and the Mean Green Sports Network (95.3 FM KHYI, 88.1 FM KNTU) or by searching KNTU on the tuneIN app.
The 2019-20 regular season was one of the most successful in UNT (20-11, 14-4 C-USA) history. After facing three nationally ranked opponents and six projected NCAA Tournament teams in the non-conference, North Texas opened conference play with an 8-1 record. They beat Louisiana Tech (Jan. 18) in Ruston, Louisiana, for the first time since 1952. They won at Southern Miss (Jan. 16) for the first time since 1971. They beat Old Dominion (Feb. 15) for the first time ever. Then they clinched the regular season title by ending an 11-game losing streak to Western Kentucky with a thrilling 78-72 overtime win at home over the Hilltoppers on March 1.
North Texas finished conference play with a 14-4 record, its best conference record since they moved to the NCAA DI ranks in 1957.
They did all this by having an efficient offense. They ranked in the top 20 in the nation in two-point field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and overall field goal percentage. Furthermore, the Mean Green's effective field goal percentage ranked in the top 10 for most of the year. Effective field goal percentage gives 50 percent more credit to made three-pointers.
At the end of the regular season, North Texas earned a program-best five all-conference honors. Point guard Javion Hamlet was named the league's player of the year, newcomer of the year and first team all-conference. Head coach Grant McCasland was voted the league's coach fo the year and guard Umoja Gibson was voted second team all-conference.
With the No. 1 overall seed in the 2020 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Men's Basketball Championships, UNT earned a first round bye and is now just three wins shy of winning its first league tournament title since 2010 and reaching the NCAA Tournament for a first time since then as well.
North Texas beat Florida Atlantic on Jan. 11 in Denton, 81-58. Four Mean Green players scored in double figures versus the Owls. Hamlet led UNT with 20 points and six assists. James Reese added 16 points for North Texas.
