Cox Named C-USA Golfer of the Week
3/11/2020 12:02:00 PM | Women's Golf
DALLAS – UNT senior Lauren Cox put another bullet point on her long list of career accomplishments on Tuesday by winning her first collegiate tournament at the BYU Entrada Classic and became the first UNT golfer to win a tournament since Georgina Mundy won the UALR Women's Golf Classic in the 2012-13 season.
On Wednesday, she was rewarded for her efforts by the league when she was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week – the second such honor of her career and second this season with the first coming in September. She also started a run of UNT golfers on the list after teammate Emilie Ricaud earned the nod following the Mean Green's last tournament two weeks ago.
Cox shot a 69 in Round 2 on Monday to help her team to a program record-tying round of 283 and propel herself into a comfortable lead entering Tuesday's final round. On Tuesday, she was able to hold on and win the tournament at even-par, while the Mean Green claimed their first team title since the 2010-11 season with a 19-stroke victory.
"I am very happy to see Lauren recognized by the conference this week," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "She certainly deserves the award. The improvement Lauren has made over the past three-and-a-half years is truly remarkable. She has the work ethic, resources and internal drive to make it to the next level. Three of our current players (Ricaud and Patricia Sinolungan) have now been named Golfer of the Week. It is only a matter of time before Audrey (Tan) earns it as well."
Cox and the Mean Green will return to action at the Mountainview Collegiate in Tucson, Arizona, on March 20-22.
